Have you ever been told that you’re “too sensitive”? Do bright lights, loud noises, or intense emotions overwhelm you more than they seem to affect others? If so, you might be a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP).

What Does It Mean to Be an HSP?

The term “Highly Sensitive Person” was introduced by psychologist Dr. Elaine Aron in the 1990s. HSPs possess a trait known as sensory processing sensitivity (SPS), which makes them more attuned to their surroundings and emotions. About 15-20% of the population is considered highly sensitive, meaning their nervous systems process stimuli more deeply than the average person.

Common characteristics of HSPs include:

Heightened awareness of subtleties in the environment

Deep emotional responses to experiences

Sensitivity to sensory input (bright lights, strong smells, loud sounds)

A tendency to feel overwhelmed in high-stimulus environments

Strong empathy and deep connection with others’ emotions

A need for downtime to recharge after social interactions

The Benefits of Understanding Your Sensitivity

Discovering that you are an HSP can be life-changing. Instead of seeing sensitivity as a weakness, understanding it as a unique strength allows you to embrace your true self and navigate the world more effectively.

Better Self-Acceptance

Once you realize that your sensitivity is an inherent trait rather than a flaw, you can stop criticizing yourself for feeling “too much” and start valuing your deep perception and intuition.

Setting Healthy Boundaries

HSPs are often people-pleasers, absorbing the emotions of those around them. Recognizing your sensitivity helps you establish boundaries, ensuring you protect your emotional and mental well-being.

Choosing the Right Environment

Understanding your sensitivity can guide you toward environments that suit you best. Many HSPs thrive in calm, low-stimulation settings, whether in their personal life or at work. This knowledge can help you make career and lifestyle choices that support your nature rather than work against it.

Improving Relationships

HSPs often struggle with feeling misunderstood. By recognizing your own sensitivities, you can communicate your needs more effectively with loved ones, fostering deeper and healthier connections.

Developing Coping Strategies

Since HSPs are prone to overstimulation, self-care becomes essential. Techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, journaling, and spending time in nature can help you manage stress and maintain balance.

Finally, being an HSP is not a disorder or a limitation -it’s a trait that brings depth, empathy and keen awareness. Embracing your sensitivity allows you to harness your strengths and create a life that aligns with your needs. By learning how to navigate the world as an HSP, you can transform sensitivity to a powerful asset.

„…we do not feel at home
in our interpretations of the world”
(Rainer Maria Rilke: Duino Elegies, 1st elegie, trans. Martyn Crucefix)

Life is a constant search for belonging and meaning. Biblio/poetry therapy offers safe places for supportive, helping relationships and communities, encounters and self-reflections where people have the opportunity to tackle their own subject matters. In recent years, during the most hopeless times of the pandemic and war – as Rilke says in his 1st Duino Elegie – people felt insecure and didn’t know where to turn for help in searching for belonging and meaning. Because of these collective crises, people have become more focused on big existential issues that make people aware of their own existence and encourage them to clarify their relationship to fundamental questions and values leading to a personal change and a more authentic life.

In recent times, crises and challenges facing our world and our daily lives have made various forms of therapeutic and mental health support methods more popular, including art therapies. Specifically, biblio/poetry therapy is more in demand than ever.

In Europe, the first association for biblio/poetry therapy was founded in 1981 in Finland. Since then, an organisational, training and service framework for biblio/poetry therapy has been and is being developed in many other countries. Some Hungarian, Finnish, British, Italian, Lithuanian, Croatian and Slovakian colleagues have been in contact for years. They have joint projects, training courses, and some of them meet at various professional events online and offline. But never before have they come together on a larger scale to meet face-to-face and learn more about the work of colleagues (associations and/or independent practitioners) from other countries, to exchange experiences and to join forces in the hope of developing future joint projects, research and training standards.

This 2-day international conference aims to provide the space and time for encounters and exchange, in the hope of creating a tradition and encouraging other European colleagues to organise similar professional events in the future.

Testimonials from Dimitra’s expressive writing workshops

A deep, liberating experience… I could never imagine writing would reveal so many things to me. Dimitra is a wonderful, very kind and skillfull facilitator. She was giving to the group the right amount of guidance and freedom. Thank you.
K.L., Belgium

Outstanding experience, which helps you to discover a new part of yourself.
R.N., Switzerland

Through expressive writing, I gained breath and power. I learned to see situations and myself from a whole different perspective, more intrinsically and hopefully.
N.K., Luxembourg

Freedom, revelation, catharsis. I felt like I got the pen down to my soul and then I imprinted it onto paper. And then, I faced the truth that finally was inside me. I saw, on the paper, me, in my most authentic form.
Th. K., Cyprus

It touches the soul and liberates emotions…
K.I., Greece

I liked the workshop very much, the leader was very helpful and the other participants were nice and respectful. The exercises helped me to unblock my mind and to understand better my thinking and feelings.
P.D., Berlin

An enjoyable journey, where the route is as important as the destination, since it weaves it and compensates it with thoughts, which help in subsequent journeys that we are going to make in our lives.
H.S., Cyprus

The workshop was a surprise. I couldn’t imagine we were going to dig into rough paths. I got stuck, but now, at the end, I am left with a strong aftertaste of relief, joy and sweetness for what we experienced and shared with the group. All of the members were exceptional people. Each member had a lot to give and take away. Every response, every message was a lesson. The phrase in the instructions helped me a lot: “there is no right and wrong, there is only the feeling at that moment”. So I was not ashamed to answer questions, I knew that there was no criticism, and I made sure I did the same with others. And I’m going to keep doing this.
A.H., Greece

Testimonials about the training program

I would highly recommend the training in Therapeutic Writing offered by Ms. Didangelou at the Expressing Myself Institute. The training was very well organized and structured, giving us the opportunity to learn about the basic theoretical approaches and to understand the various techniques experientially through writing. Writing enabled me to make a shift in my inner self, to explore issues important to me and to get back in touch with my inner child. Overall, it was an experience that, besides the new knowledge and skills it gave me, brought me in contact with new people and therefore created many opportunities for communication, connection and sharing of experiences. This process was very liberating and creative!
K.F., Therapist

The training in Therapeutic Writing offered by Ms Didangelou through the Institute is a complete, comprehensive and inspiring training. Therapeutic writing as a process of self-discovery and personal growth opened a new window to my horizon, through which through the practices I was able to become familiar with and effectively assimilate the techniques and application of the theory taught. At the end of the training, I closed a circle with great satisfaction and joy, giving writing my own definition now. I highly recommend it for any practitioner seeking new practices in the therapeutic process!
E.F., Psychologist

“A word after a word after a word is power”
Margaret Atwood, Canadian writer

Therapeutic writing is a systematic and purposeful form of writing that draws upon personal life experiences in order to achieve specific intended results. The crucial terms are “purposeful” and “intentional”. Merely grabbing a pencil or keyboard and starting writing is not always sufficient (Adams, 1999). A clear goal is necessary, and precise methodologies must be implemented.

Depending on the intended goal, it is referred to as either “expressive” or “therapeutic”. Therapeutically, it can be used as a complementary tool in order to deal with various mental health issues, with the assistance of trained psychologists, psychotherapists or counsellors.

This article employs the phrases “therapeutic” and “expressive” writing to refer to the process of actively engaging with and observing one’s experiences, including life’s various experiences, traumas, lessons, quests, disappointments, joys, and foibles. This approach describes the purposeful and intentional use of a cathartic, reflective, process or integrative writing to further therapeutic goals (Adams, 1999).

Sometimes, simply opening our diaries and writing is insufficient. According to psychotherapist and clinical journal therapist Kathleen Adams (1998), “free writing is without boundaries, unstructured, open–ended, non-directed”. While it may be suitable and helpful in certain situations, it can also be overwhelming and confusing in others. Writing that is guided by an expert and follows a structured approach is more likely to achieve success.

According to writer and journal facilitator Sandy Grason (2005), writing is a window into whatever is important to someone. It can bring clarity to a very confusing world. Specific strategies are provided based on the aim of each case.

One of the basic goals of psychotherapy is to help people better understand their problems and their reactions to them (Rogers, 1980). Expressive writing can be very useful for this aim, because when someone writes about their experiences, they see them from a distance and change their point of view. The paper becomes a mirror of their thoughts and feelings.

Dr. Ira Progoff (1992) is a pioneer in journal writing. His method is called “Intensive Journal”, in which he uses specific writing techniques. He believes that when people who get through a difficult period in their life and experience physical or emotional pain use writing, they find more than expected power, tenderness, sensitivity, capacity for insight and harmony. When someone works intensively on their life, they activate energies they didn’t know that existed within their soul and body.

Dr. James Pennebaker (2004), professor at the University of Texas, is a pioneer in the field and has conducted a lot of research on the benefits of emotional expression and how this relates to writing. He has found that expressive writing helps people organise their thoughts and find a meaning in their traumatic experiences. One of his main conclusions is that the more one finds meaning in life’s difficulties, the smoother the adaptation will be. Writing is a valuable tool for this process. Among the participants in his research, were aids and cancer patients, sexual abuse victims and veterans of the Vietnam War.

Louise DeSalvo says: “And although writing can’t cure us (eradicate whatever it is we‘re suffering from), some studies suggest that it might prolong our lives. And it certainly can help us heal”.

Studies have shown that therapeutic writing can be beneficial:

Heal from physical or emotional pain

Reduce stress

Enhance the immune system

Change mood

Understand the past

Recover from trauma

Process life experiences

Understand and integrate the personal story

Organise life

Deal with social life

Have better performance at work, school or studies

Increase the possibilities of finding a job

Who benefits from expressive writing?

Anyone can use expressive writing at any stage of their lives. It can be used equally on quiet or more stressful days, during life transitions or trauma recovery. It can be used by children, adolescents, adults or elderly people. It can also be used for addictions, ageing, HIV/AIDS, anger, anxiety disorders, bipolar illness, depression, mania, chronic or life-threatening illness, co-dependency, dis-associative disorders, eating disorders, dream interpretation, dysfunctional families, family relationships, grief or loss, guilt or shame, incest or sexual abuse, psychosis, schizophrenia and thought disorders (Adams, 1998). Additionally, writing can be used for increasing self-esteem, raising self-awareness, listening to your inner voice, finding your authentic self, making an integrated personal story, increasing intuition, gaining wisdom and insight.

In expressive writing, there is no right or wrong. Facilitators encourage participants to free themselves and learn to write without the anxiety of criticism. They learn to accept their writings as part of themselves and interpret them on their own.

In moments of ecstasy, in moments of despair

the journal remains an impassive, silent friend,

forever ready to coach, to confront, to critique,

to console. Its potential as a tool

for holistic mental health

in unsurpassed.

❓ What Is Me Time & Who Needs It

Me time is the time a person takes for personal enjoyment, relaxing practices, or other activities they enjoy. Women’s magazines popularized the term as a break women need to rest from parenting, work, household chores, etc. However, today me time is considered vital for everyone who cares about their own welfare.

Having me time means being present with your mind and body to recharge your batteries. You can spend it in various ways, depending on what gives you energy. Some people choose to have a bath, read a book or binge-watch Netflix, while others go for a walk or do yoga. As long as you’re alone with your thoughts, you’re successfully undertaking me time.
